My dentist tells me I have a bad bite. What does that mean?

I get this question often from new patients. At one point they were told that they grind their teeth or that they have a bad bite. Let me take a moment to explain what that means.

If you have noticed, that your teeth have changed in appearance over the past five years there maybe a reason related to the way your teeth fit together. If you notice that your teeth are getting shorter, the edges are thinning, or your teeth are shifting your dentist maybe able to determine the reason and treat the problem.

The chewing system consists of muscles, joints, and teeth. If these components are not working efficiently the weekest link will start to break down. Depending on the individual, a person may have joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, or teeth wearing down.

On the other hand some people grind their teeth and there's nothing that will stop that. SO the treatment depends on the problem. The best way to find out what's going on is to visit a dentist trained to diagnose and treat these problems.
